Flat Rock Furniture Co.

Native American

If you’re on the hunt for homegrown furniture, look no further than hickory wood. Indigenous to the continental U.S., the hickory tree makes furniture that's both durable and attractive. And that's what Flat Rock Furniture, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of Lodge-style hickory furniture, is all about: comfort, style and longevity.

Founded in 1986 by furniture industry veterans, Indiana-based Flat Rock produces beautiful, handmade hickory furniture that’s designed to be passed down through the generations. The company leases land to grow acres and acres of hickory trees. Using a variety of special harvesting processes, harvesters hand-select the specific trunks and branches that go into creating each piece of furniture.

Once the hickory has been harvested, Flat Rock’s master craftsmen build each item using split-seat construction, which yields sturdier, more durable furniture. Each individual piece is then hand-finished in one of a number of different finishes, including Natural Bark, Vail, Saranac, Burntwood, Maize and Wheat. Also chosen by hand are the little branches that serve as ornaments on top of some Flat Rock chair styles.

The collection itself boasts a vast array of furniture items -- various chair styles, dining tables, beds, dressers, nightstands, writing desks, settees, benches, rockers, loveseats, armchairs, ottomans, accessories and more. But the beauty of this collection isn’t in the quantity, it’s in the quality and the fine details.

The Windsor Chair, for example, features two versions. One combines smooth-sanded hickory saplings with a woven cane seat and back, while another offers the same model but with a leather seat and woven cane back. One of the numerous Side Chair styles combines rustic hickory and fine-grained leather. The real detail, however, is found in the back of the chair, which features a fan-shaped motif of smooth-sanded hickory twigs.
