Our Green Commitment

It’s About More Than “Being Green”

We recognize that our business has a direct environmental and economic impact on the world and our own employees. We are sensitive to these global environmental concerns. It is our commitment to positively interact with the environment, our customers and our employees. With this commitment in mind, Frontera will only partner with manufacturers that share one thing in common: high quality products that stand the test of time. Because one thing is for certain: truly quality products, constructed of premium materials, will last, and therefore not end up in a landfill.

IBAMA Logo

All materials used in the construction of our Decor Americana and New River lines of furniture are certified and approved for use by the Brazilian Department of Natural Resources (IBAMA) http://www.ibama.gov.br and/or the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) http://www.fsc.org. No endangered wood species or environmentally sensitive species are ever used. Our supplier factory has the complete documentation available with either the IBAMA documentation or their supplier, which is a full chain-of-custody FSC certification.

IBAMA requires that the documentation and certification of the wood, saw mills and that the wood was harvested legally in an area that was properly documented and lawful. If IBAMA determines that the documents associated with the lumber is not in order, and if the wood were deemed illegal, the lumber would be immediately confiscated and the perpetrator would go immediately to jail, punishable with stiff prison sentences.

Ecological Environment

Respect for the natural environment through sustained forest management is at the core of our values and business philosophy. Wood is a renewable and replenishable resource that needs to be handled with care and consideration for the continued supply and enjoyment of future generations. Sustained forest management can be viewed as selective harvesting. It starts with an assessment of all trees in a given area to determine which ones will be selected for removal. Once the land deemed for tree removal is legally changed from forest to agriculture, only fully-grown and mature trees are removed. This allows more light, nutrients, and water to reach the immature trees in the upper-story; providing ideal growing conditions for the remaining trees. The process is finished once harvesting is complete and an inventory of the forest is taken to assist with future harvesting cycles.

Environmentally Protected Logo

All of the suppliers of Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry), which includes the complete chain of custody – saw mills, timber harvesters and transportation are required by Brazilian Federal Law to be registered and work under the rules of an Institution called IBAMA (Instituto Nacional do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais). IBAMA regulates and monitors timber harvesting.

Strict laws and government regulations control areas for timber harvest. IBAMA Certification is required at each step of the chain of custody; from harvest to saw mill, to transportation, to fabrication. Each group of logs we purchase has a document with an associated IBAMA or FSC certification number.

Our commitment to ecologically minded business is practiced on all of the Brazilian Cherry “Jatoba” we source. The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA) closely monitors sustained forest management practices to ensure that Brazil’s forests are replenished and capable of supporting wildlife for future generations.

Kingsley-Bate's Green Commitment

Preservation of the Earth's ecological system is today a major concern. Indiscriminate deforestation of the Amazon Basin and other rainforests has led to widespread suspicion by the public of those companies in the teak industry. Kingsley-Bate is the first American company to use Javanese teak in the manufacture of its furniture. Our teak is harvested from carefully controlled plantations, established in Indonesia by the Dutch in the mid-19th century. The Indonesian government allows the felling of a limited number of trees each year, and ensures that an equal amount of reforestation takes place. In 1983 Kingsley-Bate, in conjunction with the Indonesian government and its people, undertook to develop a teak furniture program in Java. Since then, Indonesia and Kingsley-Bate have shown that such a program can be implemented without detriment to that country's natural resources. Due to the increasing demand for this beautiful hardwood, Kingsley-Bate now uses a select amount of Burmese teak in its productions. Whether Javanese or Burmese, you can be assured that we use only the finest quality teak in our furniture.
