Oiling Teakwood Furniture

Treating with teak care products or other preservatives is not needed to protect teak wood and will not extend the life of your furniture; its use is purely cosmetic. We do not recommend oiling your furniture because it creates unnecessary maintenance. But, if you prefer to retain its original color we offer the following as a guide to the best results: 

(1) Golden Care Teak Protector should be applied before the furniture begins to weather and change color. If it has begun to weather, scrub your furniture with a stiff poly-bristle brush and soapy water, rinsing as you go with the garden hose. (Note: There are several wood deck cleaners available that will make the job much easier. A pressure washer works wonderfully too). Then allow the furniture to dry fully.

(2) Your furniture MUST be completely dry, otherwise moisture trapped within the wood may cause black mildew spots to appear after applying teak protector. Your furniture may take up to 48 hours to dry out fully after a rain.

(3) Ensure the surface is clean and free of dust.

(4) Use genuine Golden Care Teak Protector - do NOT use "finish." This is available through Frontera or other local retailers who stock fine teak furniture or marine supplies (teak oil is used extensively on boats). For warranty reasons, we recommend using a teak care product specifically recommended by the manufacturer of your teak furniture.

(5) Follow the instructions on the teak care for application. Generally, this would be to apply a light coating with a clean, lint-free rag or paint brush. One coat is sufficient.

(6) Teak will trap dirt and darken with age. Therefore, it will be necessary to scrub off the old teak care product and recoat periodically (once a year is generally sufficient). Follow the instructions in #2 for "cleaning" or the directions on the teak care label.
