CARE & MAINTENANCE
TEAK FURNITURE
CUSHIONS & UMBRELLA CANOPIES
Before placing cushions on your teak furniture, remove any dust from manufacturing by wiping the furniture with
a damp cloth. Teak has oil that occurs naturally in the wood. Expect some of this oil to bleed out following the
first few rainfalls. In order to protect your cushions, bring them inside before the furniture gets wet. Stains from
teak oil are not covered under warranty. Once the furniture has begun to form a silver-gray patina, it is no longer
necessary to bring the cushions indoors. This information also applies to fabric umbrella canopies used on teak
umbrella frames.
THE WEATHERING PROCESS
Teak wood furniture, when left outdoors, will form a handsome silver-gray patina. This process will take about
nine months depending on the amount of sunlight and rain exposure. (The weathering process will occur faster
in moist climates and slower in dry climates.) During the weathering process you may notice “checking” or small
cracks that appear in the wood. This is perfectly natural, as wood expands and contracts slightly when left
outdoors. Checking is cosmetic only and in no way affects the structural integrity of the furniture. A lifting of the
grain may occur on the top edges of the arms and legs. The grain will return to a smooth finish after the initial
weathering process. To aid this process, simply clean the furniture with a soft bristle brush as indicated in the
cleaning instructions below. Water spots or other discoloration may also occur during the weathering process.
These will even out with time, and the furniture will achieve a uniform silver-gray.
CLEANING
The only maintenance necessary for your furniture is periodic cleaning. First, hose down the furniture with fresh
water. Avoid spraying the teak with a high pressure hose, as high pressure can erode the surface of the timber.
Next, scrub the wet furniture using a soft bristle brush and a solution of 2/3 cup laundry detergent and 1/4 cup
bleach in 1 gallon of warm water. When finished, rinse the entire piece with more fresh water to remove any
remaining cleaning solution. This procedure is sufficient for general cleaning. For more difficult stains we
recommend using Kingsley-Bate Teak Cleaner. This will remove the silver-gray patina and restore the furniture
to a light brown color.
TEAK CARE PRODUCTS
Teak Protector. If you prefer to keep your teak furniture a golden color, we recommend using Kingsley-Bate
Teak Protector. This is a purely cosmetic application. The product will maintain the golden color for a season
and can be reapplied as needed. You should wait two weeks before applying the protector to newly assembled
furniture. We suggest you try it on a small area of your furniture first, such as the underside of a chair. We will
not be responsible if you apply the product to your furniture and are not satisfied, or if instructions on the label
are not properly followed. DO NOT USE OIL on teak furniture that is used outdoors. Oiling outdoor teak may
cause mildew or irregular coloring.
Teak Cleaner. If your furniture has weathered and you wish to remove the silver-gray patina, we recommend
using Kingsley-Bate Teak Cleaner. The cleaner will restore the furniture to a light brown color regardless of how
long the piece has been outside. This product requires no heavy scrubbing or polishing and takes
approximately thirty minutes per piece to apply. NOTE: this product will not remove the gray color on furniture
that has been treated with our Instant Gray product.
Teak Shield. Our Teak Shield product protects wood from food and drink stains. A completely transparent
product, Teak Shield makes it difficult for stains from red wine, salad oil, and coffee to penetrate wood, so that
fresh spills can be wiped away with a damp cloth. The product is also recommended for impeding mildew
growth on furniture used in climates where mildew is prevalent. Teak Shield can be used on clean, naturally
weathered wood, or on furniture that has been treated with our Teak Protector or Instant Gray. Apply two or
more times per year depending on use and exposure.
Instant Gray. To create the immediate appearance of silver-gray teak, you may wish to use our Instant Gray
product. Using a wipe-on applicator, Instant Gray will change the wood color from brown to gray in about an
hour. One treatment is all that is necessary, and then furniture will weather naturally with time and exposure to
the weather. A single coat of Instant Gray may be applied for a light finish, or 3-4 coats for a darker finish.
STORAGE
Teak furniture may be left outside all year round without an outdoor furniture cover. Snow and freezing
temperatures will not harm the furniture. If you prefer to store your furniture, we recommend doing so in a dry,
unheated garage or garden shed. We do not recommend the use of furniture covers, as many varieties do not
provide proper ventilation and can make the wood susceptible to mildew growth.
INDOOR USE
If using your furniture indoors, we suggest you periodically apply a thin coat of paste wax (e.g., Briwax or
Johnson’s Wax). Doing so provides teak with additional protection from natural body oils, dirt, and dust.
WOVEN FURNITURE
Kingsley-Bate’s woven furniture is made from the finest quality man-made wicker available. This remarkable
material is specifically designed for use outdoors and is exceptionally weatherproof, colorfast, and tear-proof. It
is highly resistant to UV rays, chlorinated water, salt water, body lotions, microorganisms, and stains from food
or drink. Hand-weaving and subtle variations in the wicker’s color and texture give each piece a unique
character and highly natural appearance.
CLEANING
To clean your woven furniture, rinse the frame with fresh water using a high hose pressure. Be careful to avoid
any teak details on the furniture as the high pressure can erode the surface of the timber. Optionally, you may
wash the woven material with mild detergent and warm water using a soft brush. After washing, rinse with fresh
water until there are no soap bubbles remaining. Allow the furniture to air-dry. If using a specialty outdoor
furniture cleaner, avoid using a foaming product, as foam cleaners can leave residue in the gaps of the weaving
and later attract dirt.
STORAGE
Woven furniture should be stored for the winter in climates exposed to freezing temperatures. Furniture must be
stored in an upright position to allow for proper water drainage. Storing furniture upside-down may cause water
to accumulate and freeze inside the frame, causing structural damage. Always thoroughly clean your furniture
before placing in storage. While the best place to store woven furniture is a dry garage, garden shed, or
basement, it may also be stored outdoors using breathable furniture covers.
CUSHIONS, SLINGS & UMBRELLA CANOPIES
CLEANING CUSHIONS & UMBRELLA CANOPIES
To clean cushions and umbrella canopies, follow the instructions below. Also refer to the “CUSHIONS &
UMBRELLA CANOPIES” information under the TEAK FURNITURE care and maintenance instructions.
Cushions and umbrella canopies are constructed using a 100% solution-dyed acrylic fabric. The fabric should be
cleaned regularly before debris and dirt accumulate and become embedded. To clean the fabric, brush off any
loose dirt, and then wash briskly with a sponge using water and a mild natural soap (Woolite® is acceptable).
Water temperature should be no more than 100° F, as acrylic fiber is heat sensitive at high temperatures. Do not
steam press, iron, or dry in electric or gas dryers.
For removing stains, such as suntan lotion, use a fabric spot remover. You may also contact our customer
service department for additional recommended cleaning solutions for specific stains like wine, coffee or paint.
Although acrylic fabric does not promote mildew growth, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances
that are not removed from the fabric. To clean mildew stains, prepare a mild solution of one cup bleach and two
capfuls of natural soap per gallon of water. Spray on the entire affected area and allow to soak in. If necessary,
scrub vigorously with a sponge or clean cloth.
After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with water to remove any soap residue, and allow to air dry. If a cushion is
saturated with water, unzip the cushion and stand it on its edge (zipper side down) in a dry, sunny location.
Because our umbrella canopies are removable, they may be machine washed on a gentle cycle using cold
water and a mild soap (Woolite), then air-dried. Never use hot water to wash the canopy, as acrylic fiber is heat
sensitive at high temperatures and can shrink. Do not steam press, iron, or dry in electric or gas dryers.
CUSHION STORAGE
Kingsley-Bate recommends that cushions be stored for the winter in climates exposed to snow and freezing
temperatures. Cushions should be cleaned and allowed to air dry before placing into storage. Always store
cushions in a dry, well ventilated area.
CLEANING SLINGS
Kingsley-Bate slings are made of 100% vinyl-coated polyester, an extremely durable, fade resistant, and easy to
care for fabric. Regular maintenance will help extend the life of the fabric. We recommend cleaning the fabric
twice yearly for moderate use, or more often for heavy-use applications.
To clean, prepare a solution using 1 Tbsp. liquid dish detergent and 2 Tbsp. bleach mixed in 1 gallon of fresh
warm water. Clean the fabric using a sponge or soft cloth dipped in the solution. After cleaning, rinse the fabric
thoroughly with fresh water and allow it to air dry.
Avoid putting the fabric in direct contact with oil-based products, which may cause the fabric to age more rapidly.
If direct contact with an oil-based product occurs, clean the fabric promptly.
